What is VoIP MMS?
MMS stands for Multimedia Messaging Service. Whereas SMS is a short plain-text message of 160 characters or less, MMS is an enhanced, interactive format that allows you to send images, animated GIFs, video, audio, documents, links with media previews, and compressed files. It can also be a longer text message.
VoIP MMS is a feature that allows businesses to send messages directly from their Voice over IP (VoIP) business phone number. Businesses increasingly use messaging to send offers and promotions to customers, often referred to as “the future of sales” due to its 98% open rates. Messages with multimedia, in turn, are more visually appealing and more engaging than plain-text SMS.
What does the VoIP MMS feature look like?
MightyCall’s web platform has an Agent Workspace section that displays all customer communication history in a shared view, including calls, call recordings, messages, voicemails, and their transcriptions, AI call summaries, and notes left by the team, allowing agents to see interactions from other team members who have worked with the same customer, depending on the access settings. From this space, all MMS messages with multimedia files attached are available and ready for download directly in the communication thread.

Reporting and analytics
Texting communication, including MMS, can be tracked in Reports → Message Log. There, all inbound and outbound messages are available, along with details such as the time and date, contact, the employee who sent the message (for outbound), the business number it was sent to or from, message content, media attachments, and internal notes left by the team.

How to enable MMS texting in MightyCall
Messaging registration is not required for receiving text messages and MMS, but businesses need to complete it to be able to send them from a business phone number.
For local numbers, it’s called A2P 10DLC registration, and you can read more about it here.
For toll-free numbers, a process is slightly different, and you can get additional details here.
If the messaging registration process has already been completed but additional local numbers need to be added, MightyCall’s support team can add the new numbers to the registered messaging campaign and enable texting on them.
Unlike local numbers, toll-free numbers must be verified individually, so any changes or additions require submitting the verification form again.
Messaging on a business number, including MMS, both inbound and outbound, can be temporarily disabled in the Numbers → Numbers list section using the Text Messaging toggle.
How to send MMS?
After completing messaging registration, sending a multimedia message via the web panel (or the desktop app) is simple with MightyCall. It takes just a few steps:
For existing contacts:
- Go to the Agent Workspace.
- Select the contact you need to send an MMS to on the left.
- Type your message in the designated field and click the paper clip icon to upload multimedia files. Select the file(s) to include.
- Click the arrow to send it.
- Your message will immediately appear in the communication history.
For new contacts:
- Click the “Send a new message“ button in the webphone.
- Enter the phone number you want to send an MMS to.
- Write your message and click the paper clip icon to upload multimedia files. Select the file(s) to include.
- Click the arrow to send it.
- Your message will appear in a new communication thread.
Note that in all outbound MMS cases, you can change the business number you are sending messages from.
How to receive MMS?
Much like sending a message, the same steps apply to receiving MMS.
- Open the Agent Workspace.
- The left panel functions as an inbox, with “Unanswered”, “My recents”, and “Clients” tabs.
- Open the message thread with the customer. A communication thread will display previews of the files received.
- To open or download the file(s), depending on the file type, left- or right-click on the media file or its preview.
For an overview and comprehensive reports, the Message Log provides all details, with options to filter and download data for further analysis.
VoIP MMS messaging on Android and iOS
MightyCall Call Center App also allows users to send, receive, view, and download multimedia included in MMS messages. Access them in the “Recents” section and perform all necessary actions from the selected client communication thread.
To write a new message, click on the “Write a message” icon in the top right corner to choose a recipient or enter a phone number, and then upload a media file to your message.
Just like on the web, you can change the business number you are sending an MMS from.

Technical limitations when sending files
As any service, messaging does have its limitations. These usually depend on your provider of VoIP with multimedia messaging. Moreover, even if your provider supports large file formats, in mobile messaging it’s optimal to focus on user experience. A short, vibrant image with a clear CTA is preferable to a large video that may be really cool, but will take 10 minutes to process.
When using MightyCall’s service, here are the main technical tips to keep in mind as you message customers and partners:
- Check file requirements for local and toll-free numbers separately (consult the table above). Toll-free numbers are less versatile than local, but offer support for the most popular file formats including images, audio, video, and document files.
- The file limit is 10 attachments per message. If you need to attach more files, send them in separate messages.
- The character limit in the text field is 1000 characters. If your message is longer than that, you’ll need to break it into two messages.
- With MightyCall, unlimited messaging, including MMS, is available in all plans, subject to our Fair Use Policy.
- Files are stored on servers for 6 months following the date they’ve been sent/received.
Why use a VoIP service with MMS?
Using a VoIP number with SMS and MMS makes business messaging simple and cost-effective. Any entrepreneur can do it no matter the size of their business. Here are just a few benefits:
No need to get extra numbers
Businesses can send commercial messages using standard long-code phone numbers — the same 10-digit business numbers you already use. With VoIP, messaging functionality is simply added to your existing number, so there’s no need to purchase or set up a separate number.
No extra subscriptions and costs
As we mentioned above, special short-code numbers mean extra subscription costs. For a small or medium-sized business, that’s completely unnecessary. Meanwhile, a business phone system like MightyCall offers unlimited interactive messaging with your general subscription.
Both local and toll-free numbers supported
Send messages from any phone number, whether local number or toll-free. If you own several numbers, you can also choose which one to send the message from. And if you already have a VoIP number from another provider that doesn’t support messages in multimedia format or offers it at extra cost.
Accessible cloud-based platform and app
A VoIP system provides a cloud communications platform with all business interactions visible across it – inbound and outbound calls, missed calls, messages, voicemails, notes, and more. A built-in contact management system allows you to select contacts and send messages right from your business phone number. You can also use MightyCall’s VoIP app with MMS to send and receive messages.
Simple to use
Last but not least, using a single VoIP phone system for your entire communications, including calls and messages, just makes sense. Messaging is available both on desktop and in the mobile app. Which means it’s no more difficult to send a business message than a private one.
Use case
Let’s say you have a local business and want to engage your audience and secure the loyalty of old clients. You don’t want to feel like a spammer with an avalanche of messages. But you do want to have a neighborly, non-intrusive presence in customers’ lives, so that you’re first up on their minds when they need a product or service like yours.
In this case, you can use a VoIP provider with MMS to send special offers, coupons, thank-you notes, or short engaging videos to business contacts once or twice per month. Another great option is to keep a list of customer birthdays (if you have a loyalty program, or are an online service that collects this information upon registration, that’s quite simple) and send a birthday greeting with a personal discount or offer they’ll definitely see and appreciate.

Helpful terms to know about the Multimedia Messaging Service
Since we’re talking about digital stuff, it’s helpful to review a few terms you’ll encounter in this post:
Character limit – The number of words, symbols, and spaces that you can include in a single message. If your message exceeds this limit, it can be sent in several separate messages.
File extension – The suffix following the period at the end of the file name. .jpg, .mp3, .pdf, are examples of file extensions.
Server storage – When you use VoIP to receive MMS, your messages will be stored on the server for a limited time, as specified by the provider. To permanently store files, you should download the messages to your computer or mobile phone.
