8×8 vs MightyCall

8X8 Review

8×8 has been in the VoIP market for over a decade, earning themselves multiple big-time corporate customers and a solid reputation along the way. 8×8 has been around in some capacity since the 1980s and has been granted 150 U.S. patents for voice and video communication technology.

The company knows what it’s doing. This is especially true of their niche: international calling. 8×8 has cornered that section of the market like no other business VoIP provider, offering great call rates for dozens of countries abroad.

Why is MightyCall the best alternative to 8×8?

Besides great international calling, 8×8 also has a fully-functioning feature set going for it, and high-profile clients like McDonald’s and the Kansas City Royals sing the company’s virtues.

However, there are flaws with 8×8’s offers. First off, it’s a major headache to actually get a proper quote despite relatively clear prices being posted on the website. Their sales team is meticulous in the worst way, trying to squeeze your business to give you a quote you probably could have guessed before the call.

Killer Fees

Maybe the biggest drawbacks to 8×8 are the unnecessary fees that they seemingly charge for everything. It’s important to note that most industry providers do not charge fees, let alone mandatory fees.

8×8 carries an activation fee. 8×8 also charges cancellation fees equal to the monthly total times the months remaining.

The outrageousness of the cancellation fee itself renders the presence of a 30-day free trial moot (and the free trial only offers 250 minutes).

Asterisks Included

Something else that isn’t clear until you’re in the clutches of one of their sales representatives is that the unlimited calling of the X2, X4, and X-series plans is only applicable for local numbers. For a toll-free number (which are important for a national presence, especially if you’re calling abroad, which many 8×8 users probably are), you’ll be charged an extra $4.99 a month (simply for having a toll-free number) plus the minutes’ plan you’ll have to purchase. And of course, a one-time $9.99 activation fee.

This is on top of the fact that 8×8 developed the 8×8 Express plan for just $15 per user per month to try and listen to the demand for cheaper alternatives. The company proudly claims there is no contract for this plan, but that’s disingenuous since all the other plans have long-term contracts that have the aforementioned cancellation fees.

High Prices

The 8×8 Express for $15 a user is near MightyCall’s $20 per user Business plan. The 8×8 option doesn’t have high-powered features like call recording, voicemail-to-text, or CRM functionality, however. That translates to a weaker and less effective product.

The X-series plans are all much more expensive though. The X2 is the cheapest at $24 per user a month. While these plans do include strong feature sets and a long list of international countries, small businesses are not prepared to pay those fees.

Conclusion

If you don’t spend most of your business day calling internationally, 8×8 is far from your best choice. It has high per-user prices and its niche isn’t designed for small businesses. Big businesses can easily maximize value, but the desperate attempt to bring in smaller business with the 8×8 Express plan doesn’t offer as much as competitors like MightyCall is offering.
